Annihilation - Film Review

'Annihilation' is directed by Alex Garland and stars Natalie Portman as a biology teacher at a university. After a tragedy happens to her husband on a military science mission, she enters a mysterious translucent wall in the middle of nowhere, known as The Shimmer, with four other woman to discover what is behind.

'Annihilation' is an extremely smart and intense sic-fi thriller that is far more intellectual than your common sic-fi film. It takes its time to develop our lead character Lena, played by Natalie Portman fantastically. Throughout the film it gives you hints of her life with her husband, and the struggling turmoil she is experiencing, and it's enthralling.

Inside The Shimmer itself is both enticing and thrilling, and gives the characters quite a lot of uncertainty with whats going on, and what is inside. All the creepy weird creatures in the Shimmer are extremely creative and offer strong tension in scenes. The acting is all great, in particular Natalie Portman and Gina Rodriguez who both give a powerful performance.

The last 3rd of this film is immensely gripping, and gives many questions and ideas about the films themes. This is a thought-provoking piece of art, that just splashes ideas in your face, and leaves you pondering the film for ages. It's not just a film about ideas and questions though, it is also a very entertaining fun sic-fi thriller with horror elements mixed in there.

When you are about to watch 'Annihilation', go in as blind as possible, and you will be rewarded. It isn't a typical sic-fi thriller with Natalie Portman shooting creatures and 'oh no we have to escape before this happens'; this is a film, with ideas, themes, questions just booming, waiting for people to discuss them.

'Annihilation' is a great, thought-provoking, unique, entertaining sci-fi film that will have many people talking after the credits roll.
